President warns Britain should be using the North Sea to boost the economy and reduce bills
President Trump dumped on the UK’s energy policy at yesterday’s press conference by telling Keir Starmer to use the north sea oil and gas to cut bills.
On the day he signed a multi-billion pound deal based on nuclear, AI and other tech, Mr Trump used a press conference to say Britain ought to use its oil and gas reserves to bring down the cost of energy and boost growth.
The President said:
“We had the worst inflation in the history of our country and we had an expression that I used a lot, ‘drill baby drill’ and as you know, we brought fuel way down. Prices way down.
“We don’t do wind because wind is a disaster. It’s a very expensive joke really. We got our energy prices way down and that brought inflation way down. We have very little inflation and we have a very strong economy.”
He went on to say he’d advised the PM to use the North Sea reserves.
“You have a great asset here and we spoke about it, it’s called the North Sea and North Sea oil is phenomenal. I want this country to do well and you have great assets that you’re going to start using, I believe, under this Prime Minister.”
As for Mr Starmer, he told reporters he was committed to a mix of energy.
“I am absolutely determined to ensure that the price and cost of energy comes down. So the bills come down both for individuals, for families with their household bills but also for business, because this is so important.
“The mix will include oil and gas for many years to come, from the North Sea, we’ve been clear about that for some time. But we also need to mix that with renewables. And it’s the mix that’s really important.
“The approach I have taken on this is the same approach I take to many other things, a pragmatic approach.”
