The move strengthens Sheffield’s role as a pioneer in low carbon heating and supports the government’s heat network zoning strategy.
It will see heat captured from the stainless steel melting shop reused through E.ON’s district heat network in the Lower Don Valley. The innovative project not only enhances local energy resilience but also directly supports Sheffield City Council’s decarbonisation efforts.
“Sheffield has long been a centre of innovation in steel, and now it’s forging a cleaner energy future,” said Vijay Tank, Chief Commercial Officer at E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions. “This agreement creates opportunities for green jobs and increased energy efficiency.”
Liam Bates, President of Long Product at Marcegaglia, added, “We’re proud to play a part in reducing carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable industrial base in the region.”
Once operational, the scheme will help heat up to 500 commercial buildings.
It comes as part of Sheffield’s designation as a heat network zoning pioneer, targeting high-usage buildings to connect to greener communal heating systems.
