Ipsum Group has secured four 132kV Major Projects contracts with SP Energy Networks. The work supports the Government’s Clean Power 2030 ambition to deliver a cleaner, more secure electricity system.
During 2026, Ipsum’s Power Division will upgrade substations and overhead line infrastructure across Cheshire. Projects begin in March at Ince near Elton and conclude in Runcorn in Q4.
At Ince, teams will carry out the 132kV Grid Tx T1 and T2 replacement. Similar reinforcement and transformer replacement will take place at Radway Green near Alsager, completing in summer.
Further works start in summer at the former ICI Wade site near Northwich, focused on 132kV switchgear modernisation. Final upgrades at Percival Lane, Runcorn, will modernise SF6 132kV switching isolators through autumn.
Modernising grid assets is critical to reducing emissions. Stronger, smarter networks allow more renewable power to connect and reduce reliance on fossil fuel generation during peak demand.
Lee Maxwell, Managing Director at Ipsum, said: “Our business prides itself on sustainability, so we are privileged to be able to be able to support SP Energy Networks and play such a critical role in helping meet the country’s Clean Power 2030 ambition.”
Clean Power 2030 aims to cut fossil fuel dependence while improving energy security. It also underpins wider decarbonisation, as electricity demand is expected to at least double by 2050.
By strengthening local infrastructure now, projects like these help ensure low-carbon power can be delivered reliably to homes and businesses. This supports both emissions reduction and long-term economic resilience.
