New funding will support green maritime technologies, local jobs and sustainable growth in communities across the country

The funding, which comes from the sixth round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC), will support clean maritime technologies including ammonia, hydrogen, methanol, solar and electric propulsion.

It is part of the wider UK SHORE programme, which has already delivered over £136 million to more than 142 organisations across the UK.

One of the projects is Smart Green Shipping’s FastRig, a high-tech wing sail built in Glasgow that can reduce ship fuel use and emissions by up to 40% per year.

The company has received support from the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland to scale production.

Maritime Minister Mike Kane said: “It’s so exciting to see investment in green fuels and technologies spurring on skills, innovation and manufacturing across the UK . We’ve charted a course to net zero shipping by 2050 and this £30 million will be crucial in supporting the green fuels and technologies of the future, so we can clean up sea travel and trade.”

He visited Peel Ports Clydeport’s King George V Docks, where £3 million has been invested to handle large wind turbine components.

Other CMDC projects include electric vessel demonstrations and hydrogen-powered shore systems in Aberdeen and Leith.

A further £3.85 million will go to the Clean Maritime Research Hub, enabling scientific research and liquid hydrogen infrastructure development at Durham University.
