ENA promises to make it easier for homes and small businesses to go low carbon

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) is rolling out major upgrades to its Connect Direct platform as it hits 185,000 grid connection applications, promising faster approvals for domestic low-carbon tech.

Connect Direct is the one-stop shop for installers to get permission from distribution network operators (DNOs) to hook up solar panels, EV chargers and other kit.

With queues of projects waiting for grid connections a growing problem across the UK, the push to automate domestic approvals is aimed at cutting delays and freeing up resources to tackle bigger bottlenecks.

New AI-powered features mean installers can now receive instant approvals if their projects meet standardised requirements.

On the first day of the update, 33% more applications went straight through without needing manual checks. Anything more complex is still passed to the relevant DNO for assessment.

The overhaul also brings auto-completion of installer details, auto-detection of cut-out type and auto-approval of commissioning documents for generation installations.

ENA says the changes make the process quicker and simpler while maintaining accuracy.

Grid access has become one of the biggest challenges in the energy transition.

Tens of gigawatts of renewable projects are stuck in queues, with developers waiting years to connect.

By automating smaller jobs like rooftop solar or EV chargers, network operators hope to speed up the system and keep pace with demand from households going green.
