Smart data drives smoother switching as Energy Switch Guarantee expands coverage
The Energy Switch Guarantee (ESG) has published its 2024-25 Good Practice Report, showing how suppliers are using smart data to improve the customer switching process.

The initiative also announced Ecotricity as its latest member, extending coverage to nearly 95% of the retail market.

Launched by Energy UK in 2016, the ESG is a voluntary commitment to ensure energy switching is simple, speedy and safe.

The new report reflects on the progress of the retail market since the pandemic and energy crisis, with smart metering innovation at the centre of improvements.

When the ESG first launched, only around 5% of households had a smart meter. Today, nearly 70% of homes are equipped with one, transforming how customers monitor and manage energy use.

This shift has supported faster and more accurate switching, greater customer protection and more tailored services.

The report also highlights the importance of maintaining smart meter performance. While all ESG members prioritise resolving faulty meters or connectivity issues, the most proactive suppliers identify potential problems before they impact customers.

Matthew Cole, Independent Chair of the ESG, said: “The past years have seen some interesting innovation across the sector targeted at customers in particular and learning from others’ experience and building upon it leads to standards increasing for all and is a key principle behind the ESG.

“Alongside the good practice report, the ESG is pleased to announce that Ecotricity has become its newest member – confirming its commitment to protecting consumers and delivering switching that is simple, speedy and safe.”

Anita Yandell-Jones, Chief Customer Officer at Ecotricity, added: “We are delighted to be part of the Energy Switch Guarantee. This commitment not only supports our growth ambitions but also ensures that switching is simple, safe and completed within five working days — giving customers confidence and peace of mind.”
