SECR | Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting

What is SECR?

The Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) framework is a mandatory UK government scheme that requires qualifying companies to disclose their energy use and carbon emissions in their annual reports.

At CES, we help businesses easily navigate SECR obligations — from collecting and analysing data to preparing compliant, audit-ready reports. Whether this is your first time reporting or you want to streamline the process, we ensure your business stays compliant and confident.

Who Needs to Comply?

Your organisation must comply with SECR if it is:

  • A quoted company listed on a stock exchange or
  • A large unquoted company or LLP that meets at least two of the following criteria:
  • More than 250 employees
  • More than £36 million in annual turnover
  • More than £18 million in total assets

There are some exemptions (e.g. low energy usage), but CES can help you confirm your eligibility and obligations.

What the reports include

UK energy use (electricity, gas and transport)

Associated greenhouse gas emissions

At least one intensity ratio

Previous year’s figures for energy use and GHG emission

Information about energy efficiency action taken in the organisation’s financial year

Methodologies used in calculation of disclosures.

Our Approach

We take the complexity out of SECR with a fully managed, end-to-end compliance service. Our process includes:

We confirm if and how SECR applies to your business.

We gather energy consumption data across your operations.

We calculate your carbon emissions

We prepare your SECR statement in a compliant format for inclusion in your Directors’ Report.

We keep your business updated on regulatory changes and ready for future reporting periods.

Purposes of SECR

Increase awareness of energy costs within large unquoted organisations, including enhanced visibility to key decision makers.

Create more of a level playing field among large organisations, in terms of energy and emissions reporting

Ensure administrative burdens associated with energy and emissions reporting are proportionate and broadly aligned to the existing energy reporting requirements and the business reporting framework

Provide organisations in scope with the right data to inform adoption of energy efficiency measures and opportunities to reduce their impact on climate change

Provide greater transparency for investors and other stakeholders on business energy efficiency and low-carbon readiness
