Biffa has reached a key milestone in its year-long hazardous waste removal project at Ratcliffe-on-Soar – the UK’s last coal-fired power station.
The Nottinghamshire site, which closed in September 2024 after nearly 60 years of electricity generation, is being decommissioned with the support of Biffa’s Specialist Services division.
Since November, a 20-strong team of industrial chemists and dangerous goods advisors has been working on the safe removal of hazardous materials from the plant’s water treatment and fuel oil systems.
So far, 450 tonnes of waste has been cleared, including high-concentration sulphuric acid and reusable fuel oil.
The work involves confined space entry, high-pressure water systems and specialist DISAB vacuum units – all conducted under strict safety protocols.
The next phase will see dismantling of the site’s catalyst bed.
“This is not just a decommissioning project – it’s about making a safe and sustainable transition from the energy systems of the past,” said James Bissell, Head of Tankers & Industrial Services at Biffa.
“Our team’s experience in managing hazardous waste and our focus on health, safety and environmental responsibility are ensuring that this historic power station is decommissioned efficiently and responsibly.”
The Ratcliffe site is being cleared for redevelopment, to become a hydrogen and carbon capture hub, as part of owner Uniper’s transition strategy.
