SP Energy Networks has completed an £8.4 million upgrade to allow more renewables to connect

SP Energy Networks has completed an £8.4 million upgrade to its Kilmarnock Town substation, increasing grid capacity and supporting energy transition.

As electricity demand is forecast to double by 2050, this modernisation will allow more renewable energy to connect locally and be distributed across the country.

The investment is part of wider efforts to strengthen the transmission network, enabling economic growth, energy security and a cleaner power system.

The project, which began in March 2023, replaced two ageing transformers and upgraded vital equipment including switching gear and circuit breakers that had reached the end of their operational lives.

Jason Mcinally, Project Manager at SP Energy Networks said: “Kilmarnock is now better equipped than ever to meet the demands of a low-carbon future. For decades to come the region will play a key role in renewable energy generation, helping more people across the UK to access clean, green, secure energy.”

The enhancements boost network resilience and improve reliability for homes and businesses across East Ayrshire.
