Dogger Bank Wind Farm and its partners have successfully installed the final high-voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore substation at Dogger Bank C, completing the installation of substations across all three phases of the project.
The platform, manufactured by Aibel and installed by Heerema Marine Contractors’ Sleipnir vessel, stands 36 metres high and is fixed to the seabed in 23m of water.
This marks a major milestone for the world’s largest offshore wind farm under construction, set to power around six million UK homes annually once complete.
Olly Cass, Project Director for Dogger Bank Wind Farm, said: “The installation of our third offshore substation platform marks a significant leap on our journey to delivering renewable energy… This is a significant moment for the project team, our delivery partners and for the UK’s clean energy transition.”
The innovative Aibel design, first installed at Dogger Bank A in 2023, is the UK’s first unmanned HVDC platform.
These structures are remotely operated and accessible via Service Operations Vessels, reducing cost and increasing efficiency.
Each platform converts 1.2GW of AC power from offshore turbines into DC, transmitting clean energy back to shore.
Mads Andersen, CEO at Aibel, added: “We are honoured to have contributed to the world’s largest offshore wind farm… This achievement reflects the strength of our collaboration.”
Dogger Bank Wind Farm is a joint venture between SSE Renewables, Equinor and Vårgrønn. Phase A began generating power in October 2023.
The project supports 2,000 UK jobs.
