1st Energy has acquired key assets, IT infrastructure and administrative services of ‘community supplier’ Ripple Energy following its administration.
The deal ensures continuity of service for Ripple’s customer base and reinforces 1st Energy’s mission to expand access to clean, affordable energy solutions across the UK.
This acquisition marks a significant step in 1st Energy’s strategy to support community-driven renewable energy initiatives and safeguard the green energy investments made by Ripple’s clients.
The company has begun working closely with Ripple’s co-operative Board Members and energy supplier representatives to ensure a smooth transition for all customers.
Gary Christian, Managing Director at 1st Energy, said: “We are delighted to welcome Ripple customers to the 1st Energy Family. It became immediately clear through our conversations with Ripple and their administrators that there was a shared ambition to protect and preserve the community-led structure Ripple pioneered. We are fully committed and have taken all necessary measures to ensure that all Ripple customers’ green energy journey will continue with minimal disruption.”
Ripple Energy facilitated a form of community-owned energy where the public could buy shares in renewable energy generation projects. The project’s first site – a single wind turbine in Graig Fatha, South Wales – went live in March 2022 and is owned by 905 people.
Ripple only manages the cooperatives, agreeing deals with utilities to reduce customer bills in accordance with their share in the generation plants.
1st Energy will now oversee operations at Ripple’s three active project sites: Graig Fatha Windfarm, Kirkhill Wind Farm and Derril Water Solar Farm.
Meanwhile, the Whitelaw Brae site, which remains under construction, will continue under the control of the administrators, with customers receiving direct updates.
